 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry has a revered history with the Indian Army, and is home to some of the most decorated heroes that India has had the honor of having in its ranks. Among these heroes is the late Nawang Kapadia, a soldier of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry who was posthumously awarded India's highest military honor, the Param Vir Chakra, for his bravery during the Kargil War in 1999. Kapadia's story of courage and valor serves as an inspiration to those who serve in the India Army, and his legacy has been honored by his name being featured on the regimental badge of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry.

The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JKLI) is a regiment of the Indian Army and is one of the most decorated regiments in Indian military history. It was established in 1941 and is named after the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The regiment is most famously known for having Nawang Kapadia as its first ever recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest award for gallantry, in 1965. Kapadia was honored for his heroic actions during the Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan in 1999.

It is a specialized infantry force specifically created to provide defense in the high altitude regions of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
